Factors To Ponder If Using Calendula For Perioral Dermatitis

By Gertrude Rogers

The use of calendula for perioral dermatitis is an option more people are considering, with some chemical treatments perceived as being less than effective by some people. The condition itself tends to be prevalent among adult women, with face creams containing steroids identified by some medics as a potential cause. An inflammation of the skin is the main symptom, and the condition can often be mistaken for acne, though spots, whether white headed or black headed, are not typical symptoms.

Other symptoms include the feel of burning in the affected areas of skin, which are usually found around the sufferer's mouth. Bumps may appear which, like spots, are filled with pus. The rash may also spread to around the affected person's forehead or nose, which is why it is sometimes mistaken for acne.

The affected areas may also itch, although this is not especially common. A doctor or nurse can usually diagnose the condition by examining the skin. Conventional treatments include the prescription of chemical ointments, with typical active ingredients including Sodium Sulfacetamide with sulfur, Clindamycin, Benzoyl peroxide and Tacrolimus, among other chemicals.

Some doctors may also prescribe oral antibiotics to be taken in conjunction with other treatments. Ridding a patient of the condition can take many weeks and even months of treatment. Steroids are never used to treat it as face creams containing them have been identified as a possible cause of the condition.

Sun screens and moisturizers are often used in tandem with more specific treatments to help alleviate a sufferer's symptoms. Some other studies have suggested that using toothpastes with additional added fluoride or chemicals designed to battle tartar can also be a an aggravating factor in the onset of this kind of dermatitis. Herbal remedies such as calendula are often used to complement the treatment process, helping reduce the amount of time it takes.

Calendula has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities, meaning that applying it to affected areas may well be efficacious. An agent which promotes healing, it also acts as a moisturizer and may also help with the prevention of scarring. It is also considered very safe to use, having no known safety issues when interacting with more conventional drugs.

What works for one individual may not work for another though, as bodies react in different ways to things based on circumstances. Using calendula for perioral dermatitis treatment can work though. The best way to go about any kind of complementary treatment is to take advice from a properly qualified professional practitioner.
