By Laura McFadden

A large number of women will suffer from some discomfort and mood changes during menopause and will seek medical advice. In many cases, a doctor will prescribe medication that can help to suppress many of the symptoms such as night sweats. More women are now choosing natural remedies and may consider using soy products for menopause relief and some research is advisable before you begin.

All general practitioners will have a list of medication that has been approved and they can prescribe to help them combat some of the unpleasant symptoms of menopause. Hormone replacement therapy is the most common of these and is widely used. A lot of HRT users have experienced side effects when taking it and the natural remedies could be better suited to these patients.

In the past few years, many women have started to drink soy milk to help them with their night sweats and hot flashes. This product contains phytoestrogens which counteract the body's chemicals that cause these sweats and flashes. Although this has yet to be medically approved, there have been some excellent results for many, and there is a great deal of research under way.

Some of the medical reports investigating the use of soy based products have produced mixed opinions and findings and things are not clear. A number of patients have reported some digestive problems and other health problems after regularly using it. There is still a lot of research and testing to be done, and until then, the official facts and findings are unavailable.

Other medical reports that have been published say that taking soy on a regular basis can increase the risks of cancer. Women who have previously suffered from breast cancer have been advised not to take soy due to the estrogens that it contains. Other studies have claimed that it prevents cancer so these results are conflicting at the moment. If you have ever been diagnosed with cancer it is advisable to consult a doctor before you include these products in your diet.

There are many ways to use soy in your diet and it can be found in most stores. Milk is very popular and it is also used to make burgers, sports bars and cereals. A lot of vegetarian ready meals and meat substitutes that are on the market will contain tofu and this is regularly used in things such as sausages.

If you are considering alternative medicines or therapies there are a couple of important things to think about. If you start using soy products and you do not notice an improvement then it may not be the correct way to go. If you start to feel better after using it then you should continue as long as you do not experience any other health problems.

Prior to using any treatment you should ask the advice of your family physician. A healthy diet and taking regular exercise is also recommended to help you to respond to your treatments better. There is a lot of information to be found online regarding soy, and it is a good idea to read as much of this as you can.
