Basic Details Regarding Custom Shoe Lifts

By Debra Young

Some people have large enough differences on leg length which they can not adopt from it resulting for ill effects to be experienced. Samples of the effects are sacroiliac or lower back pain and hip, foot or knee problems. The discrepancy could be caused by hip surgery, diseases like polio, uneven growth, broken leg bones and compensate other problems like pelvic or spinal scoliosis.

This can be treated by shoe lifts which are firm inserts on shoes that adds length to the shorter leg for better balance in the lower body. There are companies who make custom shoe lifts so you could have the exact height you need. They can either be internal or external ones depending on how big the difference is or your preference.

Wearing them might make each shoe feel different because some lifts have cushions on them so its more comfortable if it has no cushions. Long term comfort and minimum foot stress is important because this will usually be needed permanently. And the same elevation must be added in all shoes you regularly wear if possible.

The maximum elevation must be half an inch which is the generally accepted one for use without affecting your stability. The size, style and fit of your shoes affect the usable maximum height on them though laced ones are permitted with more. This is the reason why different footwear will need different types of lift.

When the compensation you require is more than a half an inch then this should be externally added in the heels and soles. Less stress will be caused with this on your lower leg and foot and for higher lifts, adding both external and internal ones is recommended. But remember to start small and slowly increase to the needed height for your body to adapt.

This ideal height you specifically need will be determined through long time experimentation because even a minor difference matters. These can improve shoe comfort and other effects that differences in leg length have on you. Try slightly changing the lift elevation and observe the effects it gives you for a number of days or weeks.

They often recommended to start wearing half of what your measured difference on leg length is but should be based on when the discrepancy started to exist. Begin small and increase slowly with the height you need if many years has been since it started. But if this change is recent only then it is recommended to have full elevation in minimizing adaptive changes.

Using shoe lifts is a personal and medical decision so a health care professional is recommended to be involved. They are important with evaluating what you need and in monitoring what the results are when wearing these. Without their involvement, you would not know the exact tallness of the lift that you must wear and might cause more problems instead.

These can be used when doing active sports such as tennis, dancing, running or golf then a firm one is a must. They should not compress under load or make additional foot motion for good control and support. Using the wrong one will be risky because you may lose stability causing sprains and falls.
